UNCLE NEWT 9/ 20/07
Uncle Newt was My Mother’s Uncle and my Mother and Father were Sharecroppers on His place. When ginning season started My Father hauled cottonseed from Uncle Newt’s Gin to the Oil Mill. In Winter Daddy worked every other day in Uncle Newt’s Store and trapped fur bearing animals every other day. Uncle Newt’s wife was Aunt Emma. Most people ate biscuits for breakfast but Aunt Emma cooked corn bread for all three meals for Uncle Newt. She also made a lot of Blackberry wine so Uncle Newt had all He wanted when He wanted it. His alcoholic beverage preference was Gin but it was hard to come by out in the country. His favorite drinks were gin, wine and milk. Uncle Newt bought a Thirty Four Ford Coupe with a rumble seat. He did not want lots of people going with Him and Aunt Emma. When she became very ill local Doctors suggested she go to a Hospital in a City about two hundred miles away. My Daddy drove the car, Aunt Emma and Uncle Newt sat in the front seat and Uncle Newt would not even allow one of His grown children to ride in the Rumble seat to the Doctors. Aunt Emma stayed in the Hospital for an extended time and My Father would go drive for Uncle Newt on a regular visits. On one trip Dad stopped for Gas and Uncle Newt got some Gordon’s Gin and told Daddy He would drive. In the city Uncle Newt took a wrong turn and was making a U turn in the middle of the street. A cop ran up and said, “You can’t do that.” Uncle Newt replied, “ O” Dad Burn Son I think I will make it, ” and just kept driving.
