GRADUATION INFORMATION FOR A READER 10/16/07
It seems
one of our readers is confused about how many times I graduated from
school. I graduated from Ogden High
School in 1948.
Ralph Ross and I wanted to come back to High School another year and
play basketball so instead of graduating in1947 we told our parents we wanted
to go to college and it would be good to come back to school and graduate with
some extra subjects. While attending Ogden I was a typical
student. A few funny things happened,
Bud Johnston and L.R. Hatton climbed up a ladder and poured coke down on Mrs.
Timer Williams and you know what the foaming coke on Her desk looked like and
that is what Mr. Oliver Womack called it when He asked Mr. Jones if He had any
Boys missing. Some one climbed in the art room window and messed up Miss Birdie
Hatton’s students paintings and she told Coach Elmer Hatton who was Principal
until Mr. Peel got out of the Army either He paddled the two boys She knew that
did it or she was going to whip Coach Hatton. The two boys were seniors but Coach whipped
them any way. I will mention some other
funny things in a later story. A very funny thing happened to the piano at a
graduation night you will certainly like a lot or be ashamed of the happening a
lot.
After graduating at Ogden
in 1948, Ralph Ross and I enrolled at summer school that summer. That kept us out of the cotton fields and
introduced us to college life. One
personal funny thing happened to me, one of My Professors looked real hard at me
for a few minutes one day and asked me “Mr. Horne do you know what your ears
remind me of”? This was American History
and I thought maybe even some famous American, maybe even George
Washington. I replied very quietly
“no”. He said, “they
reminded Him of a Taxi Cab going down the street in New York with both back doors open”.
I graduated from Louisiana College
in January 1952 with a B.S. Degree in Physical Education ready to Coach
Basketball. I had to go into the army
for two years and they mailed me my Degree because I was overseas when my class
actually had the graduation ceremony for the January Graduates. So there is 2 dates, Ogden High School
Diploma, Louisiana
(referred by many as Holy Hill) and the stories there will come up one day.
In January 1964 I was awarded my Master Degree from Northeast Louisiana University. I attended night classes and Summer School
from 1959 until January 1964 when I graduated.
A lot happened, mostly two jobs so I could afford to teach and coach and
be Principal. I accumulated and additional 60 graduate hours
just going to school to be able to get a raise in pay. Every Governor
would promise a raise and have a plan to make the schools better, which usually
included some more graduate hours. I did
not take the extra hours to do a better job.
They did not help me much. More fun at school
later. Bye now and be sure and vote .
